Hydraulic Cylinders

Hydraulic cylinders are one of Schoolhill Hydraulic Engineering’s core products. We have over 30 years’ experience in designing hydraulic cylinders suitable for use across a number of sectors, including the energy industry’s harsh environments and deepwater operations.

Our capabilities include the development of a specialist range of heavy duty tiebolt cylinders for subsea wellheads and running tools. This range incorporates unique design features that are not available from any other hydraulic cylinder manufacturer.

Schoolhill Hydraulic Engineering has also produced multi-stage double-acting telescopic rams for mobile cranes and missile loaders for the Royal Navy. Exotic alloys were used to supply cylinders for nuclear power stations.

The manufacture of mechanical handling machinery is another specialism. The cylinders on some of our machines constantly achieve 3000 cycles per day, 800,000 cycles per annum and in excess of 1M cycles between services.

Cylinder Types

There are two predominant types of hydraulic cylinder construction in common use: tiebolt series and welded series. Schoolhill Hydraulic Engineering manufactures a comprehensive range of each type. Although both cylinder construction types provide the same functions, tiebolt series cylinders that meet NFPA standards are often preferred for oilfield applications, wellhead connectors and running tools. These are also popular within the machine tool industry. Drilling equipment manufacturers, construction equipment and many process control systems seem to favour welded construction cylinders, which conform to ISO or USA standards.

Fast Track Delivery

Responsiveness is crucial in the fast-paced industries of today. Schoolhill Hydraulic Engineering holds finished parts and a large selection of seals in stock for a range of preferred sizes. We also stock pre-plated and polished piston rod materials in long lengths.

Substantial quantities of raw materials including alloy, carbon, stainless and high nickel steels are held in stock too. The company carries seal kits and spares for all the equipment that we manufacture. Our team members encourage discussion with clients regarding their required levels of stockholding and we are happy to hold stocks on a call off basis.

All of these measures are underpinned by Schoolhill Hydraulic Engineering’s computerised manufacturing systems, which support our ability to respond quickly to customers’ needs.
